Ballroom Dance Steps

There is something about dance that just grabs people’s emotions. I don’t know if it’s the music, the movement, an individual’s self-expression of emotions from the deepest part of him—whatever it is, dance is magical. How many of you have tried it all? There’s ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, contemporary. Have you ever done ballroom? Ballroom dance steps take some effort to learn but they are beautiful to watch and are well worth any effort put into them.

Types of Ballroom Dance Steps

What type of ballroom dance steps are currently catching your fancy? There are a lot of them to choose from. Many like the timeless quality of the Waltz, but others prefer a more upbeat and more entertaining form of dance like the Swing. Either way, if you are serious about pursuing ballroom as a profession, then find out what you need to do to get started right away.

First of all, you should be already taking some ballroom dancing classes. If there’s a particular dance you are passionate about— then by all means master that dance subcategory as much as you can. I would suggest though that you still take the time to learn about the other kinds of ballroom dance because it can help you with your general knowledge of dance.

How are you with your partnering skills? Dancing with a partner is one of the most important aspects of dance you should know about. It can spell the difference between an average and a fantastic performance. Get as much as you can from your dance instructor, but make sure that you have a good chemistry with the dance partner you are going to perform with.

Ballroom Dance Steps – Variations for Men and for Women

The basic rule is that if you are a man, you should be able to lead the woman; and the woman should let herself be led. Now, you should work on this until it becomes one of your best qualities.  A woman who is just waiting for the leads of her partner is obvious to other professional dancers and judges and will get deductions for this in competitions. Practice often with each other as much as you can, and get those ballroom dance steps just right.

You also need a good pair of ballroom dance shoes when you are dancing. Regular old pumps or Oxfords won’t do when you’re out with the big guys. Ballroom dance shoes are specifically made with steel shanks, suede covered heels and heel supports to adequately brace your dancing feet. This will protect you from injuring yourself out in the dance floor.

Naturally, you will also need to get a good seamstress to make you and your partner some really great costumes. It’s all about the performance so eye-catching costumes and head-bopping music will definitely not hurt you at all here. Of course you better make sure your technique measures up to your elaborate showmanship if you want to do well in your performance.

So what are you waiting for? Make your dream come true and start polishing up your ballroom dance steps. It’s only a matter of time before the spotlight finds its way to you.
