Samba is one of the most popular export of Brazil. It is said to have originated from passionate African tribal folk dances that found its way to Brazilian shores. In the 1930s, the president made samba music the official music of Brazil.

Originally, Samba de Gafieira was a pretty uncomplicated dance but over the years, more daring dancers have added in twists, turns, fancy footwork in the dance. The footwork and movements in the samba is pretty quick so if you want to learn to dance the samba, you better learn how to keep up.

Because of the high level of energy required in the samba, expect to be physically maxed out after training, or dance performance. Remember to do some warm up exercises before you begin. Stretching thoroughly will help alleviate post-dancing soreness, and more importantly prevent injuries caused by stiff muscles and joints. Take 15 minutes to roll your shoulders and neck; rotate your hip joints, knee joints and ankles; and stretch your back before and after every dance session.
