It’s one thing to know how to dance, it’s an entirely different matter altogether to learn how to slow dance. For those of you who have experienced sweaty hands and knocking knees, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

Slow dance is a dangerous animal for many adolescent teens, or even those shy adults out there. I mean, if you really like someone you do not want to make him/her feel uncomfortable but that’s a challenge in itself because you yourself have a million thoughts running through your mind on what you should do next to keep them interested in you, right? The thing with slow dance is that this particular quality gets even more magnified because you are left without distractions and you get complete solo time with the person you are in to.

So what now? How do we deal with dancing with someone in a more intimate setting? Is there something we need to know or any tips we can learn on how to do this effectively?

The first thing you need to do is to relax. I know, I know, this is not as easy as it sounds. Well, have you ever heard of the law of displacement? A bad habit can be overcome by replacing it with another habit. If we use this in this case, replace thoughts of nervousness with other things. You can start with thinking of things that you are both interested in and build on that.

Remember, more than anything, slow dancing is getting to know each other. So if you want to do this right, keep that in mind. Ask him/her to the dance floor and take it as an opportunity to just connect—and I don’t mean this as a license to grope. Talk to your partner. Keep the conversation light and easy. If the conversation is beginning to sound forced, then just keep silent and enjoy the moment together.

For the men, keep the hands on the side of the woman’s hip or one of your hand there and another holding her hand. For women, you can wrap your arms around the man’s neck loosely, depending on how comfortable you are with him. Feel the music and begin to sway with it. Move with the tune. This is all you need to know about slow dance steps to begin with. When the song ends, always thank your partner for the dance.

It’s not always easy to put yourself out there, that’s why so many people find this seemingly simple task a hard thing to do. Know what a great person you are and understand your worth. When you do, it really won’t be too hard to learn how to slow dance – just ask all the happy sweethearts on the dance floor.
