Cool Swing Dance Moves

Isn’t it amazing how much fun one can have with cool swing dance moves? You might have been at it for a while now but it never gets too old for you. Swing is a fast paced dance that is not only fun to do, but fun to watch as well.

How about you? Do you know what swing is? Maybe you don’t know how to differentiate the various styles of ballroom dances. The way to find out what swing is is to look for the couple that is having the most fun! It usually stays in one place but if you have choreography like those danced in reality dance shows, then you may have to travel all over the dance floor quite a bit.

There are many variations of swing. The original form hailed from Harlem and it’s called the Lindy Hop. This gave birth to East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing, Jive, Boogie-woogie, and Carolina Shag. If you love having parties at the beach, you might be particularly fond of the Carolina Shag.

Now musicians have said that there is no specific “swing” music genre. If the beat is good and you’re having fun, then you can swing to it all you want. Music used in swing dances is usually those that are popular during that time. Jazz, R&B, rock and roll, funk, hip hop and pop are some of the styles that are used to swing dance today.

You will often see swing danced during competitions and dance tournaments. Judging for swing dancing is usually based on these three criteria: timing, teamwork and technique. The trick to doing really well here is to practice with your partner a lot. This is after all a partner dance and you will need to be able to anticipate each other’s moves so well that both of you naturally flow with each other throughout the dance.

I would venture to guess that only a few people who are reading this would actually be performing in competitions. Most likely you just like swing and are looking around for interesting articles about it. If you only want to swing for social events, there are a few tips you need to keep in mind for you to be able to carry this out really well.

First of which is to relax. Remember, you need to have fun! It’s not as if you’re tap dancing where you need super precise moves for it to work. When you stress about it too much, you’ll tend to look down on your feet and end up tripping all over yourself anyway. Look at your partner, interact and enjoy each other’s company. Keep your knees bent and steps small so you can transition to the next steps easily enough.

There you go— cool information for your cool swing dance moves. I bet it just whet your appetite to dance some more! Go ahead and get your dancing shoes on swing sister (or brother)— after all, what’s life without a little bit of dance?
